Two photos of Voltaire taken by John Hinitt at The Tom Paine Printing Press, November 2013
THE TOM PAINE PRINTING PRESS is now at 151 High Street, Lewes, East Sussex, BN7 1XU, UK. It is Peter Chasseaud's project for a working 18th-century ‘common press’ in the environment of an 18th century printing house, with type cases, cabinets, frames and the compositor’s ‘stone’. Posters, broadsheets, pamphlets and books will be printed on the press, which will also be used to show the complexities of letterpress technology and the crucial importance of the printed word in disseminating ideas.

During this master class you will get a rare opportunity to print using the Stanhope Press which was used by founding guild members Eric Gill and Hilary Pepler to produce work for St Dominic’s Press. As the Museum is closed to the public on a Monday there will be unlimited access to the galleries for inspiration and you will have special access to works not on display to see and learn about our print collection from the Curator, which is bound to inspire your own letterpress creations. Participants will be able to produce work on the Stanhope and some of our smaller presses to take away. All materials for the day come supplied and delicious refreshments will be served making this master class a real treat for the discerning letterpress enthusiast!
